Ana Lila Downs Sánchez (born September 19, 1968 in Tlaxiaco , Oaxaca , Mexico ) is a Mexican - American singer. Her music is a mixture of different styles, and she often draws on indigenous music from her Mexican homeland, from the cultures of the Mixtec , Zapotec , Maya and Nahuatl . She has a clear political claim, which she expresses in the texts.

Life

Downs grew up as the daughter of a Scottish- American father (Allen Downs) and a Mixtec mother (Anita Sánchez) in the state of Oaxaca , Minnesota and Southern California .

She began studying music and anthropology at the University of Minnesota . As a fan of the group Grateful Dead , she turned away from singing. Back in Mexico, she rediscovered music as the key to her indigenous background. She met the American jazz - saxophonist Paul Cohen , with whom they in clubs Oaxaca and Philadelphia occurred. With him she realized all of her musical projects. She toured many countries in America and Europe . Downs and Cohen now live in New York and Coyoacán , one of the still colonial districts of Mexico City , which also houses the Blue House, in which Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived.

She became known through her participation in the film Frida about the life of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. In 2013 she received the Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Including Tejano) for her album Pecados y Milagros .
