Saudade

Saudade is a specifically Portuguese and Galician or lusophonic form of Weltschmerz . The concept of the saudade can only be roughly translated with “sadness”, “melancholy”, “longing”, “wanderlust” or “gentle melancholy”. The word stands for the nostalgic feeling of having lost something loved and often expresses the misfortune and the suppressed knowledge of never being able to satisfy the longing for what has been lost because it will probably not return.
The word may come from the Latin solitudo , but it by no means just means “loneliness”, because solidão and soledade have developed from the same root word . Saudade is not per se a negative mood, but is longed for in Fado , the Portuguese chanson.
For generations, the Portuguese have been proud of their “personal word” that only they know. One of Fernando Pessoa's most famous quatrains says :

The loss of the Portuguese after the lost battle of Alcácer-Quibir against the Moors, which King Sebastian I suffered in 1578, is also mentioned as a historically verifiable origin of the term . This devastating defeat ushered in the fall of the Portuguese empire, and the phenomenon of the subsequent messianic Sebastianism reinforces this theory of a "national melancholy".
Worldwide reception
In 2007 a German jury, commissioned by the Institut für Auslandsbeektiven eV, Berlin, chose Saudade as sixth of the ten most beautiful words in the world. A British survey of linguists and interpreters also selected Saudade in the top ten list of the “untranslatable words in the world”.
The Brazilian guitarist and singer João Gilberto brought out "Chega de Saudade" in 1958, written by Antônio Carlos Jobim (music) and Vinícius de Moraes (text), which is considered the first bossa nova song.
The South American guitarist and composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré (born in Paraguay in 1885, died in El Salvador in 1944) wrote a piece called Chôro Da Saudade for guitar, which is now part of the repertoire of many concert guitarists. British singer and composer Chris Rea has released a piece of music called Saudade that also exudes a strong melancholy. Farin Urlaub sings about Saudade in the B-side of OK in Portuguese.
The American funk metal band Extreme released an album on August 12, 2008 called Saudades de Rock .
The post-punk band Love and Rockets set the spherical piece Saudade to music on their 1985 debut album Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven .
The American singer / songwriter Stephen Bishop also released an album in 2008 called Saudade . Here he interprets some of his pieces with Brazilian rhythms.
In 2014, the American band Thievery Corporation released a studio album entitled Saudade .
In 2015 the Saudade EP by the British pop punk band Boston Manor was released.
In 1991 Etienne Daho made a contribution to the topic of Saudade in the album Paris ailleurs .
