Carminho at the ZMF 2018 in Freiburg

Carminho (born August 20, 1984 in Lisbon ; actually Maria do Carmo de Carvalho Rebelo de Andrade) is a Portuguese fado singer .

Career

She is the daughter of Nuno Maria Bello Rebelo de Andrade and the fadista Maria Teresa da Câmara de Siqueira Archer de Carvalho (* 1953). After moving back to Lisbon with her parents, she performed at an event at the Coliseu dos Recreios at the age of 12 . As a result, she sang regularly in Fado bars of the Alfama , a. a. with Beatriz da Conceição . She finished her studies (advertising and marketing), but then turned completely to fado. As the daughter of the famous singer Teresa Siqueira , she was now the new hope of Fado. In 2003 she had already recorded 4 pieces for an album called Saudades do Fado as part of the fado group Tertúlia de Fado Tradicional .

Concerts in Argentina and Switzerland followed , and she sang in Malta when the country joined the EU in 2004. In 2005, the Amália Rodrigues Foundation awarded her the prize for the best new female discovery.

In order to gain some distance from the increasing public interest in her person as well as new impressions, in 2006 she went to countries such as Cambodia , Peru , India and East Timor for an aid organization for a year . Back in Lisbon, she resumed her fado career in 2007.

In the same year she worked on Carlos Saura's film Fados . In 2008 Carminho performed at the Casa da Música in Porto and at the gala for the 45th stage anniversary of Carlos do Carmo , and sang at the World Exhibition Expo 2008 in Saragossa .

In 2009 her debut album was released, with two self-written titles alongside traditional fados. The CD, simply titled Fado , was in the Portuguese charts for 39 weeks and reached number 2. When asked why she had waited so long with an album, she answered with high expectations of her as the “new voice of Fado”. She first needed many years of experience and reflection in order to meet expectations.

In 2011 her album was released in Great Britain , where it was rated one of the 10 best albums of the year by the specialist magazine Songlines . She gave concerts in Mozambique and on the rarely visited Azores island of Graciosa , in Amsterdam and Madrid , and at the Songlines Festival in London . In March of that year she sang as part of the exhibition on the history of fado at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris , on the occasion of the recognition of fado as a world heritage site .

In May 2011 she gave a concert in Lisbon's Lux Frágil , where she a. a. was accompanied by three famous musicians of the Portuguese guitar (Ângelo Freire, Luis Guerreiro and Zé Manuel Neto). In Fado, it is common to have just one Portuguese guitar accompanied by other instruments. This concert was filmed by director João Botelho and released on DVD. In 2011 she performed at the world's largest world music fair in Copenhagen , WOMEX . After the good reviews, the international tour offers continued to increase. In March 2012 her second album Alma ("Soul") was released.

On January 27, 2015 she was appointed "Commendador" of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique .
