The Festival da Canção is a Portuguese music festival . It has been held since Portugal's debut at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 as the Portuguese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , and is produced and broadcast by the public television broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP).
history
In the following years Portugal did not take part in the ESC competition or there was no Festival da Canção:
- 1970: Despite the non-participation of Portugal, a Festival da Canção took place, the winner was Sérgio Borges with the title Onde Vais Rio Que Eu Canto .
- 2000: Thirty years later, Portugal was not allowed to participate, but the festival took place anyway. The winner of the Festival da Canção was Liana with the title Sonhos Mágicos .
- In 2002 there was no festival because Portugal voluntarily decided not to participate in the ESC.
- There was no festival in 2005 as RTP internally selected its candidate for Kiev . The duo 2B with the song Amar was selected .
- There was no festival in 2013 because Portugal suspended ESC participation for financial reasons, but returned in 2014.
- There was no festival in 2016 because Portugal was suspended for financial reasons and due to restructuring at the station. In 2017, however, the country returned and won the competition for the first time with Salvador Sobral .

Venues
The Festival da Canção has been held in various locations in Portugal since 1964. Most of the finals will take place in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. In addition to Lisbon, the semi-finals will also be held in other cities in the country.
