Algueirão-Mem Martins is a small town and municipality in Portugal . It is a northwest suburb of Lisbon . Along with Amadora , Setúbal , Queluz and Agualva-Cacém, it is one of the largest cities in the suburbs of Lisbon.

One of the main attractions is the Catholic Church of Nossa Senhora da Natividade . The Colégio Afonso V is one of the city's most important educational institutions.

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement since the Middle Paleolithic . The Romans left a multitude of traces, including some villa rusticas that produced food for nearby Olissipona (now Lisbon). Arabs lived here under Moorish rule after 711 . The place name Algueirão is of Arabic origin.

Algueirão developed into the most important place in today's municipality, and was already listed in 1527 as a municipality seat. In 1640 it was still the seat of a municipality, only to be incorporated into areas of other municipalities in later administrative reforms.

The current municipality of Algueirão-Mem Martins was created on January 5th, 1962, by spinning off from São Pedro de Penaferrim and Rio de Mouro . On December 20, 1965, 23 people died here in the Algueirão railway accident .

On February 1, 1988 Algueirão-Mem Martins was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).
