Algueirão railway accident
In the Algueirão railway accident on December 20, 1965, a passenger train and a freight train collided near Algueirão-Mem Martins in Portugal . 23 people died.
Starting position
The passenger train No. 4909 was pulled by an electric locomotive. It was only moderately manned as it was due to leave Lisbon Rossio train station before the evening rush hour. In the opposite direction of the freight train that the wrong station Portela de Sintra in Sintra had left, and the two diesel locomotives were biased.
the accident
Due to a wrongly set point , both trains in the western entrance of the Algueirão-Mem Martins station were directed to the same track , so that there was a head-on collision. The accident occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m.
consequences
23 people died in the accident , including the train driver of the passenger train, and 30 people were also injured. All three involved locomotives and several wagons suffered total write-offs. First aid was provided by the medical unit of a pioneer stationed in Sintra - a battalion and numerous fire departments in the area - including from Lisbon - were deployed at the accident site. The work continued until the next morning.
