The Festival da Canção 2018 took place from February 18 to March 4, 2018 and was the Portuguese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon ( Portugal ). It was the 52nd edition of the competition organized by the Portuguese broadcaster RTP.

format

concept

After Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 , it was decided to stay true to the classic preliminary decision Festival da Canção . A total of 26 Portuguese composers were invited to compose a song each for the preliminary round. On October 25, 2017, these were divided into two semi-finals with 13 participants each. The seven best entries from each semi-final will qualify for the final on March 4, 2018. In the final there will be 14 entries, of which the one with the most votes wins in the end and will represent Portugal at the ESC 2018.

Choice of contribution

Unlike other preliminary decisions, RTP invites Portuguese composers who will compose a song for an artist. In the selection of the 26 composers, 22 of them were invited by the broadcaster RTP, one selected via the Master Class program of Antena 1 , two via a public selection and one by the Portuguese ESC winner of 2017 Salvador Sobral . The composers were then allowed to choose their singers themselves and also had a free choice of language for the composition. However, only Portuguese singers were allowed.

Moderation

On January 18, 2018, RTP introduced the six moderators who will moderate the competition. Two people each moderate a program. The first semi-final will be moderated by Jorge Gabriel & José Carlos Malato , the second by Sónia Araújo & Tânia Ribas de Oliveira and the final by Filomena Cautela and Pedro Fernandes.

jury

The jury consisted of a total of nine jurors who were responsible for 50% of the overall result. It consisted of: Júlio Isidro (jury president), Ana Bacalhau, Ana Markl, António Avelar de Pinho, Carlão, Luísa Sobral , Mário Lopes, Sara Tavares and Tozé Brito.

Attendees

On October 25th, the composers will each draw their starting order and thus also which semifinals they will ultimately take part in. 13 participants take part in each semifinals, which were presented on January 18, 2018. Among them are two returnees. José Cid represented Portugal at the ESC in 1980 and 1998 , while Anabela represented Portugal in 1993 .
