In order to avoid being drafted into the military and deployed in the Portuguese colonial war , Palma went to Copenhagen in 1973 with his first wife Gisela Branco , where he worked as an assistant in the local Sheraton Hotel . He spent most of 1978 and 79 in Paris , again as a street musician, before going back to Lisbon in 1979 and recording his third album there. After another stay in Paris in 1980, with his second wife Graça Lamy, he came back to Lisbon in 1982 to record a new album.

In 1983 his first son Vicente was born. With his next album O Lado Errado da Noite (Eng: The Wrong Side of the Night), he first received more attention in Portugal. In 1986 he completed his piano studies at the National Conservatory (today Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema or Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa ) and recorded his seventh album. A number of other publications followed, in addition to works for the theater. In the 1990s he mainly performed new interpretations of his own pieces. He became popular in the country's music scene through numerous concerts. He was accompanied at times by musicians from Xutos & Pontapés (Kalú and Zé Pedro) and Rádio Macau (Alex and Flak) as Palma's gang , with whom he released a live album in 1993.
