Rádio Macau is a Portuguese alternative rock / pop - band from Greater Lisbon .

history

Xana, Flak and Alex, who already lived together in a house in Algueirão-Mem Martins (Greater Lisbon ), played together as Rádio Macau from 1983, after Alex and Flak had been making music together under the band name Crânio since 1980 (with another singer). With the keyboardist Filipe Valentim and the drummer Emanuel Ramalho, the band completed itself and began to give concerts. Especially after appearances at the Lisbon Rock Rendez-Vous , the music press and the public took notice of the band, and after a first demo tape , their piece A Noite ("The Night") was played by the broadcaster Rádio Renascença . A record deal with EMI / Valentim de Carvalho followed . Her debut album was released in June 1984, followed in 1985 by the single A Vida Num Só Dia (German: "The whole life in a single day"). After the first edition sold out quickly, it was reissued, this time as a single and as a maxi single . In May 1986 they released their second album, Spleen , produced by Carlos Maria Trindade . They then played a series of concerts, for the first time abroad, including Berlin , Thessaloniki and 14 appearances in Spain .

With their 1987 album O Elevador da Glória ("The Elevator of Fame", the ambiguous title plays with the name of one of the funiculars in Lisbon ) the band made their breakthrough. The more catchy pieces got a lot of radio coverage and the album became their best-selling record. In addition to the title track, O Anzol ("The Fish Hook") became particularly popular. The single was re-released in 1988 as a remix maxi single. The album O Rapaz do Trapézio Voador ("The boy of the air trapeze"), which followed in 1989, was also successful, especially with the pieces Hoje é a Brincar ("Today is not serious") and Amanhã é Semper Longe Demais ("Tomorrow is always too far away "). The album Disco Pirata , released in 1991 by the band itself, is a compilation of various special live recordings by the band, the title being the Portuguese name for bootleg and parodying the unofficial and mostly illegal concert recordings that were increasingly circulating at the time.

Disco Pirata had appeared against the will of their record company and the contract was terminated. With their next album A Marca Amarela ("The Yellow Sign") they switched to BMG (now Sony BMG ). The album achieved silver status .

After further concerts the band announced their breakup in 1993, due to the exhaustion of the group. Some band members subsequently worked on other projects, particularly Flak, while Xana released solo albums in 1994 and 1998. In 1998 Rádio Macau came together again. In 1999 they took part in the tribute project for the band Xutos & Pontapés . In 2000 they performed live again and released their album Onde o Tempo Faz a Curva ("Where time makes a curve"). For the first time they used electronic music in part. After a best of compilation and a new album released in 2003, their eighth album Oito ("8") was released in 2008 . It surprised with simple, multi-layered and harmonious pieces and subsequently reached the top 10 of the Portuguese sales charts.

Due to the voice, appearance and demeanor of the singer Xana, but also because of some musical parallels, Rádio Macau was initially compared to The Pretenders . And like them, despite their sales success, they always appeared as an independent band. Her texts often dealt with difficulties in fitting into society or finding meaning in an adapted life. Their appearance was not that of rock stars either, but was geared towards the music and the corresponding attitude towards life, without the musicians looking for the public outside the stage.
