The 52nd Festival da Canção will take place on March 2, 2019 and will be the Portuguese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ).

format

concept

Unlike last year at 26, only 16 performers will take part in the Festival da Canção in 2019. These will then be split into two semi-finals, which will take place on February 16 and 23, 2019 in the RTP Studios. How many participants will take part in the final and how the voting system will work has not yet been determined. However, it has so far been determined that the final will take place on March 2, 2019 outside of Lisbon . It is the first time since 2015 that the festival takes place on a Saturday.

Choice of contribution

Unlike in other preliminary decisions, RTP directly invites composers to write a new song for the festival. The composer is also free to choose which artist should sing the song. RTP invites a total of 14 composers for 2019. The other two places are determined by the public. One of the places is the radio program Master Class of Antena 1 forgiven. The other place is determined through a public tender by RTP. Every Portuguese citizen could apply on the RTP website from September 17, 2018 to October 31, 2018.

On November 18, 2018, RTP announced that the broadcaster had received over 200 applications for the public tender. RTP will now select one of these 200 applications for the preliminary decision.

Attendees

On December 5, 2018, RTP published the list of composers for this year's Festival da Canção. The following 16 composers will take part: On January 21st, all participating songs were released.
