In the attack in Paris on May 12, 2018 , an Islamist attacker attacked several people with a knife. One person was killed and four others injured.

Sequence of events

The assassin Khamzat Azimov stabbed several passers-by around 9:00 pm on the corner of Rue Monsigny and Rue Saint-Augustin in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris , near the Opera , while he chanted " Allahu Akbar ". One person died and four others were injured. When the police arrived, Azimov attacked them too and was shot.

Victim

The victim was a 29-year-old man. According to the French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb , the other four injured were already out of danger again on May 13.

Perpetrator

Khamzat Azimov was born in Chechnya in 1997 and came to France as a refugee with his family in the early 2000s . After his mother was naturalized, Azimov received French citizenship in 2010. The DGSI listed Azimov as an Islamist threat from 2016 after acquaintances of his tried to emigrate to take part in the civil war in Syria . Azimov had graduated from high school in Strasbourg and had recently come to the capital region with his parents.

Reactions

The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the crime. The day after the attack, a video posted on the Internet by the IS news channel Amaq appeared on social networks, which is said to show Azimov. In the video, a young man with a half-covered face swears allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in French, justifies his act with French air strikes on Muslims and calls on fellow believers in Europe to carry out further attacks.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as an act of a “terrorist” and praised the intervention of the police “who neutralized the terrorist”. In view of previous Islamist attacks , Macron stated: "France has again had to pay a blood price." The North Rhine-Westphalian Interior Minister Herbert Reul called for a better exchange of information between the intelligence services.
