  • The Free European Song Contest [ fɹiː jʊəɹəˌpiːən sɔŋ kəntest ] ( English for free European song competition , also abbreviated to FreeESC ) is a music competition organized by the TV station ProSieben and the production company Raab TV .

The first edition took place on May 16, 2020 in Cologne and was moderated by Conchita Wurst and Steven Gätjen . A second edition was announced for 2021 during the show.

    format

    Emergence

Since the 65th Eurovision Song Contest was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic , ProSieben announced on March 31, 2020 that it would broadcast the “new, free European song competition” produced by Stefan Raab .

    concept

Prominent German-speaking musicians perform live with their songs one after the other for a country to which they have a personal connection. The language in which your contribution is sung and the age of the song are optional. After the respective performances, viewers and juries from Europe award points. The entry with the most points won. Before each performance there is a comedic clip about the represented country. As in the Eurovision Song Contest, there is a pause filler at the end of all performances and before the points are awarded.

    Scoring and voting procedures

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, viewers vote by phone and SMS. In the other countries, national juries award the points. No points may be awarded for a song from your own country.

As with the Eurovision Song Contest , the number of calls and SMS will be converted into points. The best ten songs per country receive 1 to 8, 10 and 12 points in ascending order. After the voting phase, these will be announced live to point speakers in each country. National partners of ProSieben support the live broadcasts.

    Opening act and interval act

Conchita Wurst sang a medley of the songs Waterloo , Satellite and Rise Like a Phoenix as the opening act . The interval acts were Wurst with their song Under The Gun and Teddy Teclebrhan with his song Deutschland isch stable .

    transmission

In Germany, the TV station ProSieben broadcast the music competition. In Austria, the broadcasters ProSieben Austria and Puls 24 took over the broadcast signal from ProSieben in Germany. At Puls 24, Tamara Mascara , Dori Bauer and Patrick Fux also presented and commented on the broadcast. ProSieben Switzerland also took over the broadcast signal.

    Attendees

ProSieben announced the 15 countries represented on May 5, 2020. The 16th participant was announced during the show.
