The Masked Singer is a music show in which celebrities sing masked in full body costumes. The broadcast format started in South Korea in 2015 as King of Mask Singer . After further offshoots in Asia , the show debuted in the United States and Germany in 2019 .
The moderator of the German edition is Matthias Opdenhövel . The finale of the first season achieved the highest audience rate ever recorded for a ProSieben show. The second season began on March 10, 2020. ProSieben announced on April 24, 2020 that a third season should be broadcast in autumn 2020.
concept
In each show, celebrities such as singers , actors or athletes in full body costumes compete against each other with a song of their choice in a singing contest. Before the performance, a short video is shown for each of the costumed persons, in which there are hidden indications of their identity. Celebrity voices are distorted beyond singing .
In the first season, viewers vote by telephone after each duel or triall , in the second season only via the ProSieben app . The winners of the voting may keep the mask and participate in the next episode. With repeated or without repeated singing, the losers have to wait for the final vote of the respective show. The singer with the fewest calls has to take off his mask and leave the show. The others continue to participate.
In the final of the last five there is initially a vote in which the performer with the fewest votes is eliminated under exposure. This is followed by two semi-final duels, whose losers reveal themselves and whose winners contest the final duel. Finally, their identity is also revealed. The opening music is Who Are You from The Who . After a decision, an excerpt from the song High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco , in the 2nd season Tonight by Kesha .

Miscellaneous
Only 8 people of the 210-strong production team, including presenter Opdenhövel, knew in season 1 who was behind the masks.
RTL was defeated by ProSieben in the competition for broadcasting rights.
The templates for the individual costumes come from US designer Marina Toybina. They are made in Altötting by Alexandra Brandner.
Each costume costs on average between 15,000 and 20,000 euros and was created in around 300 hours of manual labor.
