Earth Song is a song by Michael Jackson and the third single from Michael Jackson's 1995 double album HIStory - Past, Present and Future Book I. It is a pop ballad that combines elements of blues and gospel as well as opera contains and was written and composed by Jackson.

The piece was written in the Vienna Hotel Imperial . It appears in a number of songs by Jackson with a socially critical background such as We Are the World , Man in the Mirror or Heal the World . Earth Song was Jackson's first track to deal with ecological aspects. However, other earth-related issues, such as war, are touched upon in the song. The play is to be understood as a complaint about the destructive and reckless behavior of the people.

Earth Song was released as a single on November 8, 1995.

It reached the top five in numerous European charts: it became a number one hit in Switzerland and Spain. In Germany it was Michael Jackson's first single, which reached number one in the singles charts; it remained in this position for five consecutive weeks, making it Michael Jackson's most successful single in Germany.

In the UK , Earth Song went straight to number one in the charts and stayed there for six weeks; there, this Christmas number one hit is Michael Jackson's best-selling single with over a million copies to date. In 1996 he performed with Earth Song at the BRIT Awards (but with full playback ). The performance was disrupted by Jarvis Cocker and so turned into a minor scandal.

Music video

A music video was produced for Earth Song , which revolved around the destruction and resurrection of the earth; the video received a 1997 Grammy nomination. Nick Brandt, who was still unknown at the time, was involved in the filming of the video in Tanzania . Brandt was so moved by the aesthetics of nature in Tanzania that from then on he occupied himself with nature photography and achieved worldwide fame with large-format photographs of African wildlife.
