Immortal is a remix album by Michael Jackson that was released on November 21, 2011 by Epic Records . The album is also the soundtrack to Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil , which started on October 2, 2011 in Montreal . Immortal is the eighth album released by Sony and Motown / Universal since Jackson's death on June 25, 2009. It is also a posthumously published original album after Michael Jackson's This Is It (2009) and Michael .

background

On October 3, 2011, Sony Music Entertainment announced that over 40 of Jackson's original recordings by producer Kevin Antunes have been reissued. Immortal includes an alternate version of the Jackson 5's ABC song as well as a number of remixes such as a choral version of They Don't Care About Us . While over 60 songs were used for the stage show, the album consists of only 20 or 27 selected songs in the deluxe version. The album was released on November 21, 2011 at the start of the show's tour, which included 100 shows in the 47 largest concert halls in the United States. The show wasn't performed in Europe and Asia until 2013.

Music genre

The original compositions were reinterpreted by music designer Kevin Antunes, which is primarily based on the tension curves of the original show by the circus company Cirque du Soleil, and accordingly takes into account the choreography on the stage. Antunes mixed rare recordings of various concerts or performances, for example a slip of the tongue in the piano accompaniment to I'll Be There with the original compositions and also selected older Motown pieces from Jackson's repertoire. The songs were also digitally remastered.

Chart successes

The album reached several chart placements in various countries, including number 24 on the US Billboard 200 , where it remained in the charts for 13 weeks.

reception

Jens Bauszus from Focus Online only recommended the album to die-hard fans of the late artist:

“The newly revised versions do not have a magical effect on the record. Despite the digitally revised sound, one feels more reminiscent of a selection of maxi singles B-sides from the 80s. That can sound quite exciting, as with the freshly polished opening bars of ' Dangerous ' or ' Thriller '. All in all, the new recordings seem tiring, if not irritating, when unexpected elements of tension pop up in some places that go perfectly with the circus show, but have nothing to do with the original. "

- Jens Bauszus : Focus Online

Randall Roberts rated two and a half stars out of four on the Los Angeles Times Music blog page . As with similar productions, such as the Beatles album Love , it is above all the mixtape- like character that makes it difficult for the listener to see the music detached from the pictures. Immortal would also be a bit cheesier than the Beatles interpretation.

Even Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic (two out of five stars) criticized the character of the album. Antunes would not reinterpret and recontextualize the songs, but rather try to fabricate hit medleys that mainly focus on the hookline . He too doubts the sense of the album and describes it as "unnecessary".
