(2010)

Invincible ( German  invincible ) is the tenth and final solo album by Michael Jackson , which was released during his lifetime. It was released on October 29, 2001, making it Jackson's first album in the 21st century. Invincible sold approximately 13 million copies internationally and was available in five color options: red, green, yellow, blue, and standard silver.

With a production cost of $ 30 million, it is the most expensive album of all time.

The album reached number one in the charts in, for example, Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Romania, Spain, Portugal, South Korea and Canada. Shortly before the release, Michael Jackson announced that he would no longer extend the contract with Epic (Sony Music), whereupon the then head of Sony Music , Tommy Mottola , broke off all single releases, video recordings and the promotion for Invincible .

In 2010 the album was voted the Billboard Album of the Decade.

Promotion and singles

The single You Rock My World was released on August 22, 2001 with an intro by Michael Jackson and comedian Chris Tucker . A short film called You Rock My World was also released, starring Michael Jackson and Chris Tucker. Despite good radio reviews, a nomination for a Grammy (best male singing; pop) and success in some charts, it had less success than its predecessors. In Germany it reached number 6.

Before the album was released, two concerts took place in New York's Madison Square Garden on September 7 and 10, 2001, with which Michael Jackson celebrated his 30th stage anniversary. In addition to Jackson himself, stars such as Whitney Houston , Usher , Britney Spears and many others appeared to honor Jackson. During these concerts Michael Jackson also sang the new single You Rock My World .

On November 7, 2001, Michael Jackson gave an autograph session at the Virgin Megastore in New York.

On December 3, 2001, the song Cry was released as the second single from the album, but was not particularly successful. For example, it reached number 25 in the UK and 65 in Australia. On the single the song Shout was to be found, which was originally intended for the Invincible album, but was then exchanged for You Are My Life at the last second .

Seven songs from the album should actually be released as a single ( You Rock My World , Unbreakable , Butterflies , Cry , Break of Dawn , Speechless and Whatever Happens ). However, after a big dispute between Jackson and Sony Music, all single releases after Butterflies were canceled. The usual world tour also did not take place.

Commercial win

It became apparent that the album's success was quickly waning. Michael Jackson blamed the then record boss of Sony Music, Tommy Mottola, and accused him at a public appearance in front of the Virgin Mega Store in New York City of supporting African American artists too little. In fact, the promotion for the new album was almost non-existent. If you had z. For example, before the release of the previous album HIStory - Past, Present and Future Book I , larger-than-life statues were erected in the world's largest cities, Invincible was not even advertised on television. Despite the bad marketing and only two releases, You Rock My World and Cry (in Europe) and Butterflies (in the USA), Invincible sold around 16 million copies internationally.

Trivia

  • As with his previous albums, Michael Jackson wrote and recorded many songs. However, many did not make it on the album and are still unreleased to this day. However, some of these songs have appeared on the internet in recent years, including Escape (also Xscape ), Blue Gangsta and A Place with No Name , which appeared on the second posthumous album Xscape in 2014 . Two songs intended for Invincible were eventually released on Jackson's posthumous album Michael ( Hollywood Tonight and (I Can't Make It) Another Day ).
  • For the cover of the album, a picture that the French photographer Arno Bani had taken of Jackson in 1999 was supposed to be used. However, this idea was rejected for unknown reasons. Some of the pictures available for selection were auctioned in Paris in 2010 .
  • A concert tour was also planned for Invincible. Due to the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, many well-known musicians canceled their tours and Jackson was one of them.
