content

The song is about how a person was abandoned by their love. After being abandoned, she waits, cries and despairs every day. At some point you whisper something in your ear: "You are not alone, I am here with you" (German: "You are not alone, I am here with you").

Background and allegations of plagiarism

You Are Not Alone was the only love song on Jackson's album HIStory . After the single was released in August 1995, it immediately rose to number one in the US charts; the last time Jackson had a number one hit in the US. In addition, the song was the subject of a longstanding copyright dispute, as its melody had already been published two years earlier by the brothers Danny and Eddy van Passel under the title If we can start all over . However, Kelly had himself registered as the author and composer of the song, against which the two Belgian composers filed a lawsuit. It was not until 13 years after the publication that a Brussels court of appeal gave the van Passel brothers the right to grant them the author's rights to the composition. Outside of Belgium, however, this judgment has no binding legal force.

Music video

The music video was shot in 1995. Jackson sings the song there, among other things, in a concert hall, but also with Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie Presley , with whom Jackson was married for two years. In the scenes where Jackson appeared with Lisa Marie Presley, both were almost completely naked, which also led to controversy.

Appearances

Michael Jackson introduced the song on the HIStory World Tour , where he barely danced in contrast to the other songs. He also brought a woman from the audience onto the stage and let himself be hugged.
