Commercial win
Number Ones is one of Michael Jackson's most successful best-of albums. In the US, it was awarded triple multi-platinum status , meaning the album has sold more than six million copies in the States alone. The album was particularly successful in Great Britain, where it was at the top of the album charts in 2003. In Germany, the success was smaller, but the album was awarded a gold record. The best chart placement in Germany was 2nd place.
Reception with the critics
Given the fact that Jackson's earlier songs in particular are widely appreciated by the critics, most of the reviews for Number Ones were also positive. Allmusic awarded four out of five possible stars, as did the English-language Rolling Stone . Eberhard Dobler from Laut.de saw the album a bit more critically and only gave it three out of five stars. “His time, great as it was, is over,” said the music critic.
background
The album stands out from a multitude of published Jackson compilation albums and was the first of its kind to reach chart positions in all German-speaking countries. The album was already very successful after its release, but even after Jackson's death Number Ones - like many other works by the singer - was sold frequently and was awarded multi-platinum status for the third time in August 2009. In addition, the album was honored at the 2009 American Music Awards despite being released six years ago . His brother Jermaine accepted the prizes for Jackson, who died in June 2009, at the event.
In the USA the album was released with a slightly changed track list, including Man in the Mirror and Ben . In addition to the CD, there is also a DVD of the same name with music videos .
