history

The song, composed by Rod Temperton , was first released as a single in November 1979. The producer was Quincy Jones . Paulinho da Costa was the percussionist . The song is about dealing with everyday stress: “ … leave that nine-to-five upon the shelf / and just enjoy yourself ”.

Michael Jackson sang the song as part of the setlist of the Jackson's music tours Destiny Tour (second section), Triumph Tour and Victory Tour as well as on his first solo tour Bad World Tour and later again as part of a medley on his HIStory World Tour .

Mariah Carey sampled Off the Wall in her song I'm That Chick , which was featured on her 2008 album E = MC² .
