history

The song was written and produced by Teddy Riley and Michael Jackson. It reached number 6 on the US charts and came back to number 1 on the Billboard Hot R & B / Hip-Hop chart as the third single on the album. In Great Britain it reached number 8, in Germany number 15. Like many of the songs on the album Dangerous , In the Closet also impresses with its hard, hip-hop- oriented drum computer beats and an R&B- heavy arrangement. The song is about keeping a relationship between lovers a secret. In the Closet is an idiom used in English when someone is not being honest about a certain aspect of their life. The New York Times wrote that only Jackson would use the term for a straight relationship. A female voice can be heard in the song, initially dubbed “Mystery Girl”, but later revealed as that of Princess Stéphanie of Monaco .

Music video

The in sepia music video held Herb Ritts shows Jackson as with Naomi Campbell dances. It was unveiled on April 23, 1992. In South Africa it was not allowed to be shown because of its supposed lewdness.
