Music & Me ( English for: " Music and I ") is the third solo album by US singer Michael Jackson . It was released by Motown in April 1973 . In total, it has been sold around four million times worldwide. The album was re-released in 2009 as part of the compilation Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection .

The album was released during a difficult period in Jackson's career. He was 14 years old at the time. His voice began to change. The music landscape also changed at the time. Inspired by other Motown musicians like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder , Jackson wanted to put his own compositions on the album. However, the label did not allow him to do so.

Although the album cover features a picture of Jackson with an acoustic guitar , he does not play an instrument on the album. Jackson later explained his frustration over this to his father, Joseph Jackson . He later worked to dissolve Michael and his brothers' contract with Motown and to negotiate a lucrative contract with Epic Records .

After it was released, it took Michael Jackson two years to release his next record, Forever, Michael , as his voice had matured significantly.

Since Jackson was on a world tour with the Jackson 5 at the time, there was little promotion for the album. The Stevie Wonder Cover With a Child's Heart was released as a single in the United States . There it reached number 14 on the R&B singles chart and number 50 on the Billboard 200 . Around 341,000 copies of the single were sold worldwide. In the US there were around 174,000. Two other songs, namely Music and Me and Morning Glow , were released as singles in the UK . However, both did not manage to enter the charts. Music and Me was sold a good 12,400 times. Morning Glow sold approximately 15,400 copies.

Another track called Too Young was released in Italy , while the track Happy was released in Australia. Doggin 'Around was released as a limited single in Holland . It should have been decoupled in the US as well, but this was then canceled in January 1974. The single only sold about 5000 times. It wasn't until many years after the album was released that Happy was re-released in the UK to support Motown's compilation 18 Greatest Hits , which reached # 53 in the UK charts in 1992. This song was previously released in France in 1981 .

Music & Me is sometimes confused with the Michael Jackson sampler of the same name from 1982. This compilation contains all songs from this album (except Doggin 'Around ) and a few tracks from other Jackson albums from the Motown era.
