Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson (born July 26, 1928 in Fountain Hill , Arkansas , † June 27, 2018 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American music manager . He was the father of a total of eleven children, ten of them with his wife Katherine , including Janet and Michael Jackson . He and Cheryl Terell have daughter JohVonnie Jackson. He was also the founder of his sons' band, The Jackson Five , of which he was also the manager.

Life

Joseph Jackson was born poor in 1928. He met his future wife, Katherine Esther Scruse, in 1947; they married in 1949 and settled in Gary , Indiana , where Jackson first worked as a steel worker and later as a crane operator.

Joseph and Katherine Jackson have ten children together and are therefore the parents of one of the most successful families of musicians: Rebbie (* 1950), Jackie (* 1951), Tito (* 1953), Jermaine (* 1954), La Toya (* 1956), Marlon (* 1957), Brandon (* † 1957), Michael (1958–2009), Randy (* 1961) and Janet Jackson (* 1966). Born in 1957, Brandon, twin brother of Marlon Jackson, died a few hours after giving birth. In 1965, Katherine Jackson became a Jehovah's Witness and she also tried to teach her children the path of this religious group.

From the beginning, Joseph Jackson provided musical support for the six boys and three girls. However, under his ambitious goal of making successful musicians out of his children, they also suffered greatly. He repeatedly drove her to top performance in various talent competitions and often punished children's mistakes with physical violence. In 1964 he founded the music band "The Jackson Brothers", which consisted of his three oldest sons. In 1966, the younger sons Michael and Marlon Jackson were added, so that the band was renamed "The Jackson Five".

As the "Jackson Five", they celebrated great success around the world, especially in the 1970s. In this formation, later renamed "The Jacksons", they went on world tours several times and produced numerous top ten albums. As his sons began to go their own ways, Joseph Jackson used the time to look after the careers of his daughters La Toya and Janet.

Joseph was the grandfather of the members of the boy band 3T , the brothers Taj, Taryll and TJ Jackson. Almost all of his children are still in the music business. The best known and most successful were and are Michael and Janet Jackson.

The daughter Joh'Vonnie Jackson (born August 30, 1974) comes from a long-term affair with the secretary Cheryl Terrell, whose existence he kept secret for a long time.

Joseph Jackson published his biography The Jacksons at Random House in Germany in 2004 . In 2006 he bought a property in Las Vegas, where he lived until his death. He and his wife Katherine had 28 grandchildren at the time of his death.

After Michael Jackson's death, he always wore a black hat and a chain that was supposed to represent his son as an angel.

As long as he could travel, he was often and gladly in Germany. Among other things, he was very often in Oldenburg , as his European manager, Ralf Seßelberg, lives there. From there he often made trips to the North Sea . Until his death, Jackson kept in touch with many friends and acquaintances in Germany.

From 2012, Joseph Jackson withdrew more and more from the public.

Jackson died on June 27, 2018 at a hospital in Las Vegas at the age of 89 years a cancer and was on 2 July 2018 the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale near his son Michael was buried.
