Katherine Esther Jackson (born May 4, 1930 in Barbour County , Alabama , as Kattie B. Screws , later Scruse ) is the widow of Joseph Jackson and the mother of Rebbie , Jackie , Tito , Jermaine , La Toya , Marlon , Brandon (twin brother von Marlon, died shortly after birth), Michael (1958–2009), Randy and Janet Jackson .

Life

Katherine Jackson was born to Martha Mattie Upshaw and Prince Albert Screws. Her father changed his name to Scruse when she was four years old, so her name changed to Katherine Esther Scruse . She contracted polio as a child , from which she appears to have fully recovered, except for the fact that she has been limping on one leg since then. When she was four years old, her family moved to Gary , Indiana . It was there that she met Joseph Jackson , whom she married in 1949. In 1965 she joined the Jehovah's Witnesses .

During the group's early years (mid to late 1960s), Katherine Jackson often designed the costumes for the Jackson Five performances . After the group moved to Motown in 1968 , they stayed more in the background. When the Jackson Five, and later Michael and Janet Jackson, became known as solo artists, she was often portrayed as a loving mother and wife. In 1984 she supported her husband in planning the Jackson Five's Victory Tour . In 1985, the US magazine Essence named Katherine Jackson “Mother of the Year”.

In 1990 she published her autobiography My Family. The Jacksons, about her early years, her relationship with her husband and nine children. Eight of her children left a comment in the foreword of the book, which also describes how her husband Joseph confessed to her several infidelities; one of them comes from his daughter Joh'Vonnie (* 1974).

When Michael Jackson was on trial on child molestation charges in 2005, she was the only family member present on each day of the trial.

On June 29, 2009, Katherine Jackson was awarded the provisional guardianship for the three children of Michael Jackson; he had died four days earlier. Debbie Rowe (Michael Jackson's second ex-wife) had applied for guardianship for the two oldest of the children, since she is their birth mother. Since Rowe had no contact with her children for years, Katherine Jackson and Rowe agreed in court on a visitation right for Rowe. On August 3, 2009, Jackson was judged to have the permanent guardianship of the children Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson.
