Crazy in Love is a song by the American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles . It was released on May 18, 2003 as a single from their debut album Dangerously in Love . Since the release, numerous cover versions by various artists have been created.

In 2002, Knowles signed a contract with Pepsi , which used the song as background music for an advertising campaign. Crazy in Love was also featured on the soundtrack of the romantic comedy Bridget Jones - On the Verge of Madness .

Background and origin

In 2002, Beyoncé recorded the song for her debut album Dangerously in Love , which was released in June 2003. R&B and soul producer Rich Harrison only had a demo tape of Crazy in Love before meeting Knowles. He said, “Yes, I had it in my hand. I didn't want to buy that song often because sometimes you don't go out right away until everything is perfect. People don't like the song and everyone is disappointed. So the song wasn't a hit with me. ”Knowles recorded a tribute of the song to Harrison three months later. In the studio, Harrison played the demo recording for Knowles. Then Beyoncé asked Harrison if he would write the song, he agreed, and Knowles gave him two hours to write the song. Harrison wrote the verse and hook , but she forgot the bridge for Beyoncé; Harrison played the instruments and Knowles sang. The topic came from Knowles and is about an "exciting and crazy love affair".

Beyoncé's friend, the American rapper Jay-Z , was hired to produce the song. At three o'clock in the morning he came into the studio and recorded a rap - verse on what he needed without writing ten minutes.

Music and lyrics

Crazy in Love is a love song composed in D minor with a tempo of 100 BPM and consisting of two chords (Bb and G). Knowle's vocals oscillate between an octave and a half , from A 3 to F 5 . The song uses both traditional Samba - rhythms and old soul influences. The wind instrument melody is a sample of the song “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So) ”by The Chi-Lites from 1970.

The lyrics of Crazy in Love are composed in the traditional verse-chorus form. Jay-Z starts the song with spoken text. After Knowles sings the "uh-oh, uh-oh" part, Jay-Z begins the monologue. Knowles sings the first verse , followed by the chorus . She repeats the "uh-oh, uh-oh" part as a transition to the second verse. The chorus is followed by the second rap. The song is then continued in the bridge .

Darryl Sterdan, who works for the Canadian website Jam! writes, called the song Beyoncé's final establishment as a solo artist. Marc Anthony Neal of the international website Popmasters describes the “uh-oh, uh-oh” passage as cheesy. For MTV News , the song represents the “best moment” on the album.

Awards

The song was awarded a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America in the United States in 2004 for over 500,000 downloads. In 2006 it was awarded gold by the Mobile Mastertone . Music video

The music video for Crazy in Love was released in May 2003 and filmed by English director Jake Nava . It shows Beyonce in various dance scenes. Among other things, she poses for a photo shoot and dances to Jay-Z's solo rap in an exotic performance. The music video also features Carmit Bachar , a founding member of the Pussycat Dolls , as a background dancer.

In the MTV documentary MTV Making of the Video from 2003, Beyoncé described the concept of the music video: “[The video] celebrates the evolution of a woman. It's about a girl who is in a relationship. She realizes she is in love. She does things she normally wouldn't. She doesn't mind that she's crazy about love. "

The video won many awards. Crazy in Love won the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards in the three categories of Best Female Video , Best R&B Video and Best Choreography . Many critics also praised the music video. Cynthia Fuchs wrote in PopMatters magazine that Beyoncé used a dance choreography in the photo shoot scene that Jennifer Lopez had already shown in her music video for Jenny From the Block (2002) and praised the fact that these dances seem more erotic with Knowles than with Lopez. She also wrote, "... Beyoncé's body became a well-known trademark that stands for" over-erotic dances "." Tom Moon of The Philadelphia Inquirer magazine wrote that Knowles moved every part of her body professionally and erotically with her entire famous body dances.
