Videophone is a song by American R & B - singer Beyoncé Knowles from her third studio album I Am ... Sasha Fierce . It was written by Knowles, Shondrae Crawford and Sean Garrett . A remix of the song was later released in collaboration with Lady Gaga and was released on November 17, 2009.

Background, music and text

Video Phone was produced by Crawford, The Pen and Knowles and initially sent to American urban contemporary radio stations, but the release of the song was recalled in October 2009. A remix version of the song was created in collaboration with Lady Gaga. This was released on the deluxe version of I Am… Sasha Fierce .

Musically VideoPhone the genre Crunk associate. The song is written in A minor in four-four time and has a moderate tempo of 120 beats per minute . The protagonist sings how she dances for a man and he films her with his videophone . This is indicated in the lines “Press record and I'll let you film” and “You want me naked? If you like this position you can tape it ”clearly.

criticism

Video Phone received mixed reviews from the critics. Guardian's Alexis Petridis compared the song to Diva , another Knowles song, and called Video Phone just as weird, but much better. The Rolling Stone described Knowles' vocals as a dirty groove in a slippery song. PopMatters' Colin McGuire wrote that Video Phone was sexy enough to get to the point where it was uncomfortable to hear the song in a room with your father. Daniel Brockman of The Phoenix magazine simply described the song as dirty for an artist like Beyoncé. Bernard Zuel of The Sydney Morning Herald describes the song as "terrible".

The remix version with Lady Gaga was rated negatively by Fraser McAlpine on BBC Radio . Yahoo's Chris Willmann compared the song to Lady Gaga's Telephone , on which Knowles had a guest appearance, and wrote that Gaga's song trumped Knowles' song. MTV's Kyle Anderson wrote that Lady Gaga "gets lost" a bit in the song.

Commercial win

The remix for Video Phone appeared in German-speaking countries as the B-side of Broken-Hearted Girl . The sales of both songs were added together and flowed into the chart rating in the single Broken-Hearted Girl , whereby Video Phone was not able to have a separate chart listing. In Great Britain , the remix of the song rose to number 58 and stayed in the British single charts for a total of 6 weeks . In the US , the remix with Lady Gaga rose to number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 12, 2009 , which is also his best ranking. The remix also reached number 1 on Billboard's “Hot Dance Club Song” charts, making Knowle's 14th number one hit on those charts. The video for Video Phone was nominated in the categories "Video of the Year" and "Best Collaboration" at the BET Awards 2010 and won the award for the first category. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , Video Phone was nominated in a total of five categories, but could not win any.
