Judas is a song by the American singer Lady Gaga . Written and produced by Gaga and RedOne , the song was released as the second single from the album Born This Way on April 15, 2011, four days ahead of schedule.

background

The name of Lady Gaga's second single was revealed in an interview with fashion magazine Vogue . Gaga reaffirmed the title on Ryan Seacrest's radio show in February 2011. RedOne was interviewed about the song at the Grammy Awards and said Judas was "even better than Born This Way ." On the radio show Last Call with Carson Daly , Gaga explained the theme of the song: “You fall in love with the wrong man over and over again, Judas is a very, very dark song. It's crazy. ” Gaga spoke to MSN Canada about the metaphor behind the song:

“'Judas' is a metaphor and analogy for forgiveness and betrayal and things that haunt you in your life and, like I believe, that it is the darkness that ultimately shines in your life. Someone once said to me, 'If you have no shadows, you are not standing in the light.' So the song is about washing the feet of good and bad, and about forgiving and understanding the demons of your past in order to ultimately move forward into your future. I just like really aggressive metaphors - harder, thicker, darker - and so do my fans. So it's a very challenging and aggressive metaphor, but it's a metaphor "

composition

Lyrically the song is about a man whom she calls "Judas" because he is cheating, but she still loves him. The theme of the song is similar to the previous singles LoveGame , Bad Romance and Alejandro . Gaga confirmed that the song is influenced by the apostle Judas Iscariot . The song has three different hooklines and a break . It contains influences from house , tribal techno and dubstep .

reception

Daily Record's Rick Fulton compared the song to " Like a Prayer on Steroids" and gave it three out of five.

Rolling Stone's Matthew Perpetua wrote: “'Judas' is a dance-pop number that plays with the singer's established strengths. Although 'Judas' certainly has its own charm and at least three insanely catchy hooks, it is strongly based on Gaga's signature moves ”.

Music video

The music video for Judas was filmed April 2-4. Directed by Lady Gaga and Laurieann Gibson . Lady Gaga said:

“The most exciting artistic moment of my career. It's the greatest work we've done. "

“The most exciting artistic moment of my career. We have created the greatest. "

- Lady Gaga :

Norman Reedus embodies Judas, Lady Gaga can be seen as Maria Magdalena and Rick Gonzalez as Jesus.

content

The video begins with the twelve apostles riding motorcycles on the highway. They arrive at a biker club where Judas gets involved in a brawl. Mary Magdalene actually wants to tell Jesus about the impending betrayal by Judas, but succumbs to its charms. Interspersed in the plot are dance sequences and close-ups of Lady Gaga.

After the second chorus, the singer Judas holds a gun to her mouth. A lipstick shot out and smeared his lips. Then you see Judas, Jesus and Mary Magdalene in a bathtub, washing their feet. After a scene that resembles the birth of Venus , we see Jesus betrayed by the kiss of Judas in front of his followers. The video ends with Mary Magdalene being stoned by the crowd.

criticism

Even before the music video was released, there was a dispute with the American organization Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights .
