Bad Romance is a song by the American singer Lady Gaga . It was released as the first single from their second album The Fame Monster (2009). Produced by RedOne and written by herself, the lyrics were inspired by the paranoia Lady Gaga experienced while touring the world from 2008 to 2009. After a demo version of the song surfaced, the finished version of the song premiered on Alexander McQueen's show at Paris Fashion Week in October 2009.

The song received praise from most critics and was compared to Gaga's second single, Poker Face . Bad Romance became a commercial success, reaching # 1 in the United Kingdom , Ireland , Canada , Austria, and Germany , among others , while reaching # 2 in states like the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Bad Romance was ranked the ninth best song by Rolling Stone on their list of “25 Best Songs of 2009” and received a Grammy for “Best Female Vocal Performance - Pop” on February 13, 2011. The song was ranked 9th worldwide in 2010 , Sold 7 million times.

The accompanying video received critical acclaim and was nominated 10 times at the MTV Video Music Awards 2010 , and won 7 awards, including Video of the Year. The video also won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video.

background

Bad Romance became the first single from The Fame Monster , Gaga's successor to her debut album The Fame . Even before the song was officially released, a demo version of the song was illegally published on the Internet, which Gaga commented on Twitter: “Leaked next single is makin my ears bleed. Wait till you hear the real version. ”/" The demo version of my next song is making my ears bleed. Wait until you hear the original version ". She sang a short piece of the song on Saturday Night Live on October 3rd with her other singles Poker Face and LoveGame . On October 6, 2009, Bad Romance premiered at the Paris Fashion Week Show by designer Alexander McQueen .

Lady Gaga stated that Bad Romance was one of the songs she wrote while on tour in 2008. The songs that were composed during this time deal with various "monsters" ( paranoia ) that she faced during the tour. One of these was the "love monster" and the inspiration for bad romance . Gaga said she always felt alone in relationships. In Grazia Magazine, Gaga shared more about her inspiration:

“I wrote ['Bad Romance'] when I was in Norway on my tour bus. I was in Russia, then Germany, and I spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe. They have this amazing German house techno music there, so I wanted to make an experimental pop record. I wanted to leave the 80s a bit, so the chorus on a 90s tune is what the inspiration was. Whiskey was certainly involved in writing the song as well. It's about falling in love with your best friend. "

The cover image was released on October 15, 2009 and shows Gaga in a red dress, face down and covered in fabric.

composition

"Bad Romance" was written by Lady Gaga and RedOne while the latter produced the song. The song was recorded at Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles and FC Walvisch Recording Media Studios in Amsterdam. According to MTV's Gil Kauffman , the pace of bad romance is similar to Gaga's previous single, Poker Face . The song begins and ends with a quote from the fugue in B minor from the Well-Tempered Clavier (Part I) by Johann Sebastian Bach . Then the song begins with the chorus, later changing to the "Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah, Roma-roma-mah, Gaga-ooh-la-la" hookline. This is followed by the sound of the drum beats and the keyboard. After the first verse the transition follows, in which Lady Gaga speaks the following: "You know that I want you, And you know that I need you, I want your bad, your bad romance". Then the whole chorus begins, in which she sings “I want your love, And I want your revenge, You and me could write a bad romance […] Caught in a bad romance”. During the interlude, Gaga sings the verses of the refrain in French: "Je veux ton amour, Et je veux ta revanche, Je veux ton amour".

The song is in A minor . The song follows a chord progression of Am – C – F – C – G or of F – G – Am – C – F – G – E – Am in the chorus.

reception

Bad Romance received mostly good reviews. About.com's Bill Lamb wrote that Lady Gaga's singing was "at its best" in Bad Romance . The song is an "intense litany of almost pathologically romantic entanglements" on rhythms that are suitable to fill the dance floor. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic mentioned the "heavy steel synthesizers " and named the piece as an example of the " Eurotrash " influences on The Fame Monster . The Guardian's Kitty Empire wrote that singles like Bad Romance make Gaga more comparable to Madonna . Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine described the song as one of the highlights of the album and said: "If you could give melodies a timestamp, it would have marked the 80s [on their bottom]."

Christopher John Farley of The Wall Street Journal praised the availability of the hook on Bad Romance , and Michael Hubbard of MusicOMH said the chorus on Gaga's song is best yet. Pitchfork Media placed Bad Romance at number 39 on their list of "Top 100 Tracks 2009" and said the song was "Epic in Construction". The dark quality of the music was noted by Simon Price in The Independent , who noted that the first line of the song, "I want your ugly, I want your disease" sets the tone for the Gothic art of The Fame Monster .
