Lord of the Lost (dt. Lord of the Lost ) is a German dark rock - band from Hamburg to singer and frontman Chris Harms .

history

Lord of the Lost was founded by Chris Harms in mid-2007. Harms was previously active as a singer and guitarist in the rock band Philiae from 1999 to 2004 and from 2004 as a guitarist and second singer in the glam metal band The Pleasures and as a musician in various projects such as Big Boy and UnterART. Originally just called Lord , musicians who were friends quickly joined and a band developed from the planned solo project. In order to avoid any name disputes with Lordi and The Lords , the name was changed to Lord of the Lost. After a single for the song Dry The Rain had already been released in advance , the debut album Fears was released on the independent label Out of Line in spring 2010 . During the recording of the second album in 2010, Lord of the Lost went on an extensive tour, which also went abroad, and made guest appearances at various festivals such as the Wave-Gotik-Treffen , the Wacken Open Air or the M'era Luna Festival .

In spring 2011, the first single from the second album Antagony was released under the title Sex on Legs , which was released shortly afterwards. The band also supported Mono Inc. as the opening act on their first part of the Viva Hades Tour .

In summer 2012 the third album Die Tomorrow was released . Shortly before the release, the band began work on the fourth album. In October, Lord of the Lost played in the opening act for Last Instance on their Eternal Tour. The co-headliner tour Darkness Kills (together with Unzucht ) took place in spring 2013 , followed by the We Are the Lost tour together with Lost Area in September . In October 2013 Lord of the Lost performed as part of the Gothic Meets Klassik in the Leipzig Gewandhaus with the Zielona Gòra Symphony Orchestra .

In February 2014, the band separated from their drummer Christian Schellhorn, the place was taken over by Tobias Mertens. In March 2014, the band played their first US tour, which was funded in advance by crowdfunding . Within two months, fans and sponsors raised $ 12,775, surpassing the previously set target of $ 10,000.

In March 2015 Lord of the Lost released Swan Songs, a purely acoustic album that entered the German album charts at number 34 . The live premiere took place at the Out of Line Weekender in Berlin in the same month.

In 2015 Lord of the Lost released the EP Full Metal Whore . The album tour took place under the motto Make Love Make War with the support bands Darkhaus , Eyes Shut Tight , Vlad in Tears and Erdling . In December 2015, A Night To Remember - Live Acoustic In Hamburg , the DVD and Live CD for the acoustic tour in the spring, came out.

The first single The Love Of God for the new album Empyrean was released in May 2016. This was followed by the band's first major European tour, Make Europe Great Again (MEGA) , together with Combichrist , Filter and (at the German concerts) Rabia Sorda . Empyrean was released at the end of July 2016 and is the second concept album after Antagony . Various festival appearances followed, such as Castle Rock 17 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where the band had their open air premiere as The Lord of the Lost Ensemble in an acoustic-classical guise, supported by classical musicians and the former drummer Christian "Disco" Schellhorn, would have. In December 2016, guitarist Bo Six announced his departure from the band for professional and personal reasons. At the beginning of January 2017, the band presented their new guitarist with π (Pi).

In July 2017, Mertens announced a break from Lord of the Lost for personal and professional reasons. Since then he has been represented at live performances by Niklas Kahl . At Christmas 2017, the line-up was completely changed and Kahl was officially presented as the new drummer.

style

Lord of the Lost can best be assigned to the genre of dark rock, with influences from the field of metal . In an interview with the scene magazine Orkus , Harms named groups such as Rammstein , Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails as well as the early Roxette as musical influences .

reception

Lord of the Lost at Amphi Festival 2017

Although not always perceived as particularly innovative, the debut album Fears received mostly benevolent reviews from the music press. The Sonic Seducer praised the "pleasantly deep and auspicious singing" as well as the "gloomy, melodramatic moments" and described the album as a "dark melange of musical styles that make the work seem fresh and varied". In Zillo , the debut was called "not really original or even groundbreaking", but the "tough, uncompromising numbers" were praised. Orkus, on the other hand, said that one had to wait a long time for such a “varied, interesting and good album”. Metal.de described the album as “absolutely okay”, but suggested that you test the album first, as it “might be too hard for one person, perhaps too soft for another”.

The second album Antagony reminded the Zillo editor's vocals of a “wrestling encounter between Ville Valo and Marilyn Manson ”, and the work was not as original as one might have expected at first. However, an increase from the debut is recognizable and Harms' changeable voice has potential for the future.

Tomorrow received an overall positive reception from critics. Metal.de saw a further development compared to its predecessor, which was "poppier" and "more suitable for airplay", but also more mature, and had more well thought-out texts. For the first time, guest musicians also took part in the album. B. Alexander Wesselsky from Eisbrecher and previously Megaherz , Ulrike Goldmann from Blutengel , Erk Aircrag from Hocico and Martin Engler from Mono Inc. The album reached number 33 in the German album charts.
