The Lords are a German beat and rock band , originally from Berlin , later from Düsseldorf , who were represented in the German charts between 1965 and 1969 with songs in English. Her best-known pieces include Have a Drink On Me , Shakin 'All Over , Poor Boy and Gloryland .

Hardly any other rock music group has been active in the German-speaking area for over 55 years, and with the Rolling Stones or Ventures, for example, they are among the longest-lived bands worldwide . They currently hold the official RID world record as the "oldest rock band in the world".

Beginning

In 1959 they started out as a skiffle band in Berlin under the name Skiffle Lords , some of them self-made instruments, and performed in pubs and at smaller events. On April 7, 1961 they won the competition for "The Golden Washboard" announced by the Berlin Senate .

On July 23, 1964, the United Artists production of the Beatles film Yeah Yeah Yeah was released in German cinemas. Before the premiere, a competition was held to find the “Berlin Beatles”. The Lords emerged victorious from this competition on July 21, 1964. That is why they were allowed to take part in the nationwide final at the Hamburg Star Club . On September 6, 1964, The Lords also won here; they were named "Germany's No. 1 Beat Band".

At the end of 1964, the band received a record deal from EMI in Cologne and was now marketed as The German Beatles . In the same year, their only German-language single, Hey Baby, let the Andern / Tobacco Road, was released . While the A-side was Leo Lietz's own composition, the socially critical B-side was originally from John D. Loudermilk and received a German text from Peter Moesser . The record missed the charts. EMI has now agreed to English-language productions under the direction of music producer Heinz Gietz .

The second single, a cover version of Shakin 'All Over , originally by the British band Johnny Kidd & The Pirates , reached number 11 in the German charts in August 1965 . The third single, Poor Boy , which was written by Klaus-Peter Lietz in three hours and reached number 12, did hardly worse . The song became the band's signature song, although it was originally intended as the B-side of a single.

In 1965 The Lords consisted of Ulli Günther (vocals), Bernd Zamulo (bass), Leo Lietz (guitar), Rainer Petry (guitar) and Peter Donath (drums). In December 1964, the previous bass player " Lord Knud " Kuntze was eliminated because of an accident with the touring bus in which he lost a leg. He then began a career as a disc jockey for the radio station RIAS .

Between 1965 and 1969 The Lords had twelve titles in the German charts, mostly produced by Heinz Gietz. Her biggest hit was the classic Gloryland from September 1967, which reached number 5, her last success was called Three-Five-Zero-Zero in August 1969. With the exception of Poor Boy, it was classic English or American folk songs that were in contemporary Beat versions have been rearranged. The Lords toured with the Kinks , The Who and Casey Jones & the Governors during this period .

The Lords brought out a total of 30 singles in Germany up to and including 1989 (excluding re-releases and special releases), which achieved a record turnover of seven million copies.

Trademarks and media

Optical trademarks were her uniform dress, consisting of melon , white ruffled shirts, vests, pressed trousers and leggings , as well as Prince Valiant hair styles . Acoustic characteristic was her English with a clear German accent.

In the Beat Club , the first German television program with English-speaking interpreters, which was dedicated to youth culture and rock music, The Lords first appeared in the fourth episode on January 22, 1966 with seven songs. In total, the band had more than 300 television appearances. In 1967 The Lords were listed as "Top Stars of the Year" by the youth magazine Bravo ; In 1969 they received the bronze Bravo Otto .

Appearances and Günther's death

The Lords initially appeared in the opening act of British bands, for example in October 1965 at The Kinks in Munich. Their success enabled them to perform as the main band in the Legia Stadium in Warsaw in 1967 in front of 25,000 spectators; they were the first western band that was allowed to perform in an Eastern Bloc state.

The Lords disbanded in early 1971. From 1976 they played together again in different line-ups. In 1979 Rainer Petry was briefly replaced by Peter Power, who in turn was replaced in September 1979 by Josef "Jupp" Bauer. In 1980 Peter "Max" Donath was replaced by Werner Faus. In 1998, Werner Faus was followed by Philippe Seminara as drummer, who was replaced by Charly Terstappen in 1999. In mid-2011, Seminara took over the drums again.

Ulli Günther released a solo single Wir haben ein Idol (Harald Juhnke) in 1998 . On October 9, 1999, he broke for years from heart failure , suffering at an anniversary concert in Potsdam suddenly due to cardiac arrhythmias together. He hit the back of the head and suffered a skull fracture with bleeding in the brain . On October 13th, the founder of the Lords died in a Potsdam hospital.
