The Wojska Polskiego Stadium in. Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego ( German Stadium of the Polish Army named after Marshal Józef Piłsudski , short: Stadion Wojska Polskiego ) is a football stadium in the Polish capital Warsaw . It is the home of the Legia Warsaw football club and belongs to UEFA stadium category 4 .
history
After three years of construction, the stadium was opened on August 9, 1930 with the game Legia Warsaw against Europa Barcelona (1: 1). From 2008 to 2011, the stadium in need of renovation was completely rebuilt while the game was in full operation and now offers 30,967 spectators in its four covered stands. In November 2008, fans were allowed to take away a souvenir from Legia's old home before the demolition. The construction took place in two phases. First, the opposite stand and the stands behind the gate were rebuilt. This was followed by the construction of the main grandstand. The roof structure is covered with a membrane .
Due to the gradual renovation, 5,900 places were available during the construction work. The old facade of the main grandstand in the west was partially dismantled for the construction and later reconstructed. The opening of the arena, half-finished with three tiers, took place in August 2010. In the first game Legia met on August 7, 2010 on Arsenal FC from London and lost 5-6 goals. The venue was complete in May 2011 with the fourth grandstand.
On July 19, 2011, Legia signed a sponsorship agreement with the Polish department of the soft drink manufacturer Pepsi on the naming rights. The contract has a term of three years for an annual amount of six million zł . This happened without the permission of the city. The city officially continues to operate the venue under the name Stadion Wojska Polskiego im. Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego . At the end of 2014, the sponsorship agreement with Pepsi was terminated.
