The Ernst-Pohl-Stadion ( Polish Stadion Miejski w Zabrzu im. Ernesta Pohla , German  municipal stadium in Zabrze named after Ernst Pohl , since 2016 also known as Arena Zabrze ) is a football stadium in the Polish city of Zabrze (Upper Silesia) in the south of the country . The arena currently offers 24,563 seats and serves as a venue for the Górnik Zabrze association . It is named after the German-Polish soccer player Ernst Pohl . The playing field of the sports facility was surrounded by an athletics facility until the renovation .

history

The Ernst Pohl Stadium in Zabrze , a Polish city in the Silesian Voivodeship , was built in 1934 and opened on September 2nd of the same year. The new stadium was designed by Gustav Allinger and named Adolf-Hitler-Kampfbahn , as Zabrze was on the territory of the German Reich at the time. After the end of the Second World War , the name was first changed to Zabrze Stadium and then in 2004 to Ernst Pohl Stadium . Ernst Pohl was a Polish soccer player who made 46 appearances in the Polish national soccer team between 1955 and 1965 and played most of his soccer career with Górnik Zabrze . This club has been using the stadium as a venue for home games since it was founded in 1948. Together with Ruch Chorzów, Górnik is Polish record champion with 14 titles and has won the Polish Football Cup six times . Furthermore, the club reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970 , but where they lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the Prater Stadium in Vienna . Górnik Zabrze currently plays in the Ekstraklasa, the highest league in Polish football.

The Ernst Pohl Stadium in Zabrze has hosted international matches for the Polish national football team a number of times. An international match took place here for the first time on October 17, 1984, when Greece was visiting as part of qualifying for the 1986 World Cup . Poland won this game 3-1. Since then, a total of seven international matches have taken place in Zabrze, the last one against Germany in 1996, when Poland lost 2-0 in a friendly against Berti Vogts' team . The largest number of spectators was recorded on September 22, 1957, when Gwardia Warsaw made a guest appearance at Górnik Zabrze and around 50,000 people streamed into the stadium.

After the celebratory start of construction on September 14, 2009, the stadium has only been rebuilt in several construction phases since September 2011 due to financial problems. In the first phase, all grandstands except the main grandstand will be built, which is why the current stadium capacity has now been around 3,000. It is expected to be completely finished in the coming year with the completion of the main stand and thus have a total capacity of 31,871 spectators. The stadium and the box office can be illuminated in the club colors (red / blue / white) after the renovation, as in the Munich Allianz Arena .

The stadium, which was converted into three grandstands, was inaugurated on February 21, 2016. The almost 25,000 tickets for the opening game were sold out within a few days. In front of a sold out house with 24,563 spectators, Górnik Zabrze lost in the Silesian derby against Ruch Chorzów 2-0.
