Schubert Gambetta , full name Schúbert Gambetta Saint León , (born April 14, 1920 in Jacinto Vera , Montevideo , † August 9, 1991 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Player career

society

Schubert Gambetta, also spelled Shubert Gambetta and nicknamed "Mono Gambetta", was a descendant of Santino Gambetta, who emigrated from Liguria to Uruguay at the beginning of the 20th century . He began playing soccer at the Independiente club , which was located in the Montevidean district around Avenidas Rivera and Osorio. On November 30, 1937, the Club Atlético Peñarol signed him first . After a tough legal battle, he finally switched to competitor Nacional Montevideo . The right defender made his debut there in 1940 in the first team and played first until 1948 and after moving to Colombia again from 1950 to 1956 for the club. During his time at Nacional he was able to win the Uruguayan national championship title ten times (1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1955 and 1956) and the Copa Aldao in 1940 and 1946 . The Montevidean clubs Sud América and Club Atlético Progreso as well as Millonarios and Cúcuta Deportivo (1949) from Colombia are given as further career stations of "Mono" Gambetta . In 1960 he ended his career in the ranks of the second division relegated CA Mar de Fondo , one of the smaller Montevideos club.

National team

Gambetta was also a member of his home country's national team and won the 1950 World Cup with it by beating Brazil 2-1 in the final . At the Football World Cup in 1954 , he was also in the Uruguayan squad, but was not used. He also worked at the South American Championships in 1941 , 1942 , 1945 and 1947 with where Uruguay won the tournament in 1942. He completed a total of 36 international matches between February 9, 1941 and March 23, 1952, in which he scored three times in the opposing goal.
