Juan Burgueño , full name Juan Burgueño Pereira , (born February 4, 1923 in Montevideo , † September 21, 1997 ) was a Uruguayan soccer player who was world champion in 1950, but has never played an international match.

Career

society

The dark-skinned Burgueño was born in the Montevidean street Comodoro Coe in the Barrio Buceo , between Larrañaga and Alicante streets . Other sources place him as the son of the Barrio La Unión . At the beginning of his career, offensive player Burgueño played for Sud América . There he was initially a member of the youth team and moved up to the first team in 1945. In 1947 he was involved in Club Atlético Atlanta in the Villa Crespo district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . From 1948 to 1955 he was then in the ranks of the Montevideo-based association Danubio . In total, he completed more than 200 games for the club from Montevideo. In 1954 he achieved his best result at club level with the Uruguayan runner-up. The following year he was also involved in Danubio's tour of Mexico and Central America.

National team

Burgueño was also a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team . After he took part in the Copa Río Branco in 1946 with the Celeste and made his debut in the national team in 1947, he was also part of the squad at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil . Since Burgueño was not used in the tournament and had not played any international matches for his home country either before or after the World Cup, he is one of the players who became world champions without ever having played an international match. The Italians Giuseppe Cavanna and Pietro Arcari had previously achieved this "feat" at the 1934 World Cup and their compatriots Aldo Donati and Bruno Chizzo at the 1938 World Cup .
