William Martínez , full name William Rubén Martínez , (born January 13, 1928 in Pueblo Victoria , Uruguay , † December 28, 1997 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Career

society

The defender first played for Sportivo Alba in his youth and moved to Nacional in 1942 . He was a member of the youth department of the Bolsos until 1946. In the following years he worked for the Rampla Juniors from 1948 , where he played himself in the foreground. In 1955 Martínez moved to Peñarol , where he received the shirt number 2 and in the championship years 1958 to 1961, the year after he left the club again, the Aurinegros led as captain. During this time Güiyam celebrated . as he was called, his greatest successes at club level. Overall, he and his team, whose captain he was, four times Uruguayan national champion in a row (1958 to 1961). He was also able to celebrate victory at the Copa Libertadores in 1960 and 1961 and he was also successful in the 1961 World Cup with his teammates. The club then wanted to give the then 34-year-old an exit at the height of his career and subsequently employed him in the club's youth department. But Martínez pulled it back to the football field and so he rejoined the Rampla Juniors. There he was runner-up with his team in 1964. He continued his active career until he was 43 years old.

National team

Martínez completed from his debut on April 7, 1950 against the Chilean selection to his last appearance for the Celeste on May 30, 1965 against Venezuela as part of the World Cup qualification for the 1966 World Cup a total of 54 international matches for his home country. He hit the opposing goal twice. Two further internationals on March 18, 1956 against Argentina and on January 9, 1965 against the GDR do not count as official internationals, since the former was organized by the players' union and the latter was Uruguay's B selection.

Martínez took part in the world championships in 1950 , 1954 and 1962 . The first World Cup participation was also the most successful, because Uruguay won the tournament on this occasion and Martínez was able to celebrate the most important triumph of his career with the world championship title. However, he was not used in the course of the World Cup and was only represented as a substitute in the Uruguayan squad. At his second World Cup tournament in Switzerland, Martínez was then a regular for the Celeste.

As early as 1953 , he was also a member of Uruguay's squad at the Campeonato Sudamericano , where he was used in five games. He was also part of the Uruguayan squad at the South American Championships in 1955 and 1956 . In Chile he ran in three encounters. In his most successful participation in the 1956 tournament in Uruguay, which ended with winning the title, he had five appearances. In 1956 he played the Copa del Atlántico with the Celeste , the Copa Newton a year later and in 1959 his fourth and last participation in a South American championship followed, when he was on the pitch in six meetings of the Campeonato Sudamericano in 1959 . The 1962 World Cup participation remained for him without commitment. In 1965 he played the Copa Artigas and the Copa Pinto Duran with the Uruguayan team .
