Yosef Azran

Yosef Azran ( Hebrew יוסף עזרן) (Born October 19, 1941 in Marrakech , Morocco ; † February 10, 2010 in Rishon LeZion ) was an Israeli rabbi and politician .

Life

Azran's family, who was born in Morocco, came to Israel in 1957 as part of immigration ( aliyah ). There he attended high school and a Talmud college ( yeshiva ). After his ordination as rabbi at the Harry Fischel Institute, he did his military service as a military rabbi with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and later became director of an educational institution in Morocco and then of a Jewish boarding school in Strasbourg .

After his return to Israel he worked as a rabbi in a neighborhood of Jerusalem and subsequently became director of the Torah Institute in Ashdod . Afterwards he became rabbi of Kirjat Mal'achi , a small town south of Tel Aviv in the hill country of the Shefela , and as such was also the founder and chairman of "Netivot Haim" in Kirjat Mal'achi and in Bnei Berak .

He began his political career on November 21, 1988 with his first election as a member of the Knesset . There he initially represented the interests of the Orthodox " Shas " party and was later an independent member of the Knesset until June 17, 1996. During his parliamentary activities, he was a member of several committees.

Between July 1990 and July 1992 he was Deputy Minister of Finance in the government of Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir .

Subsequently, he was a member of the Presidium and temporarily Deputy Speaker of the Knesset until June 1996.

Most recently he was Rabbi of Rishon LeZion , the fourth largest city in Israel. As a rabbi he was also the author of articles and legal interpretations of the traditions of Judaism ( Halacha ) in the newspaper "Nahar-De'ah".
