Ernesto José Vidal (born November 15, 1921 in Buje ; † June 13, 1974 in Córdoba ) was an Italian-Uruguayan soccer player who took part in the 1950 World Cup with the Uruguayan national soccer team and won the title there.
Career
Club career
The 1.68 meter tall Ernesto Vidal was born in 1921 in Buje, a town on the Istrian peninsula that is now part of Croatia . At that time, however, this piece of land belonged to Italy , whose citizenship Vidal also had. He emigrated to South America with his parents . At the age of 20, he joined the reserve team Rosario Centrals in Argentina . He made his debut with the Argentines in 1941 in the first team. In 1942 he celebrated the second division title with the club. From 1944 he continued his footballing career at Peñarol , one of the most important football clubs in the small country on the Río de la Plata . There he was in the squad up to and including 1953. In Montevideo , Vidal played alongside other Uruguayan greats of the time such as Alcides Ghiggia , Roque Máspoli and Obdulio Varela and won a variety of titles in Uruguay with the club. Overall, he won five Uruguayan championships with Peñarol, which he celebrated in 1944, 1945, 1949, 1951 and 1953. Vidal then moved to Italy for Fiorentina , where he played a total of 29 games in Serie A in the seasons 1953/54 and 1954/55 , in which he scored six goals. His last footballing employer was Pro Patria Calcio , then playing in the Italian premier league. There is only one mission recorded for him.
National team
Since Ernesto Vidal had both Italian and Uruguayan citizenship, he was eligible to play for the Uruguayan national team. In the Celeste Vidal brought it between July 2, 1950 and April 16, 1952 to eight missions in which he scored two goals. In 1950 he was appointed to the squad for the World Cup in Brazil by Uruguay's national coach Juan López , without having played an international match . He was used at the tournament in almost all Uruguayan games. In the preliminary round match against Bolivia (8-0), he scored one of his two international goals to make it 3-0 in the 18th minute. He was also used in the final rounds against Spain (2: 2) and Sweden (3: 2), but did not score a goal. He only missed the decisive final round match against Brazil . In this game, the Uruguayan national team secured their second world title after 1930 , after beating the hosts 2-1 in front of an estimated 200,000 spectators in the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro .
