Juan Ahuntchaín (full name: Juan Antonio Ahuntchain Alles ) (born January 15, 1952 in Rosario ) is a Uruguayan football coach and former football player .
Player career
Ahuntchaín is the grandson of a French Basque who emigrated to Uruguay. He began his professional career as a defender at the age of 22 or 23 with Centro Atlético Fénix . He then worked for CF Monterrey in Mexico, Vasco da Gama in Brazil, Miramar and again for Fénix. He then played at least in 1984 and 1985 for Liverpool Montevideo in the Segunda División and 1987 for Defensor in the Uruguayan Primera División . The defender was part of the Defensors team, which won the national championship title in 1987.
Coaching career
Ahuntchaín was both when winning the Uruguayan championship in 1991 and at least in 1993, when he won the Torneo Apertura title and in 1994 and from January to December 1996 coach of Defensor.
From December 1996 to July 1997, he was the successor of Héctor Núñez, who was dismissed in November 1996 due to poor results in the World Cup qualification for the 1998 World Cup (2 wins, 3 losses), coach of the Uruguayan national soccer team and supervised the national team in six World Cup qualifying games and achieved two wins, two draws and two defeats with her. Ahuntchaín led Celeste to the 1997 Copa America in Bolivia. The team won one game, lost two and failed in Group B. Ahuntchaín was sacked and Roque Máspoli succeeded him as Uruguayan coach.
In December 2001 Ahuntchaín was appointed as the coach of the Uruguayan youth team. In the following years he was again employed in the coaching staff at Defensor and was responsible for the junior division. Also in 2012 he was the 11th year uninterrupted coordinator of the youth team ( Formativas ) Defensors. According to other sources, he has held this position since 1998. Fernando Curuchet succeeded him in this role in 2013 at the latest .
Since at least July 2015 he has been director of the football department of Club Atlético Peñarol .
