Pedro Cubilla , full name: Pedro Ramón Cubilla Almeida , (born May 25, 1933 in Paysandú , † March 15, 2007 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach.
Player career
society
The midfielder began his career at Nacional as a left winger. Cubilla then moved to Liverpool Montevideo . In 1960 he also played in Montevideo for Peñarol and in 1962 for the Rampla Juniors in the Primera División . While he was part of the Aurinegros , they won the national championship in 1960 and the Copa Libertadores . However, Cubilla's involvement in this international competition was not recorded that year. In 1963 and 1964 he was then under contract with the Argentine club Huracán . There he played 43 games in the Primera División Argentina and scored two goals. In the season of 1965 he was listed as a member of the River Plates team. In 1966 there was another stop at Quilmes for Cubilla. Then he was in the defensors squad . In 1968 he played for the Toronto Falcons , where he played 16 games (one goal) in the North American Soccer League .
National team
Cubilla was also a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed seven international matches between October 12, 1961 and May 2, 1962. He did not score an international goal. With the Celeste he took part in the 1962 World Cup, but was not used in the course of the tournament.
Coaching
Cubilla coached the Montevidean club Danubio FC in 1978 , with whom he took part in the Copa Libertadores for the first time in club history . According to El Mercurio , he also held the coaching position at the Paraguayan club Club Olimpia - initially as an assistant to his brother, whom he later replaced - and won national and international titles with the club. Later he was a member of the Uruguayan national team coaching staff in the early 1990s. His brother Luis Cubilla was the national coach at the time . However, he also held the office of national coach for four games. As such, he made his debut on May 5, 1991 in the international match against the US selection and from then on coached the team in the games against Mexico, Costa Rica and most recently on May 30, 1991 against Chile. Two wins under his leadership stand against two defeats. At the beginning of July 1998 he took over the coaching position at Cartaginés in Costa Rica . After eight match days, the collaboration between Cubilla and the Costa Ricans was ended again on October 5, 1998 and the work there was continued by his assistants Miguel Calvo and Marco Tulio Hidalgo .
Other clubs he coached are Deportivo Quito , Central Español and Nacional Montevideo .
At least in 1998 he was also chairman of the Asociación de Entrenadores Uruguayos , the association of Uruguayan coaches.
