The 1940 season of the Primera División was the 37th season (the 9th of the professional era) of Uruguay's highest division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted of eleven clubs in the championship season of 1940, whose teams met twice in a total of 110 championship games. There were 22 game days. The championship was won by Nacional Montevideo as first in the table in front of the Rampla Juniors and the Montevideo Wanderers as second and third in the season's final table . As the bottom of the table, Bella Vista was able to avoid relegation with two wins in the two relegation games against Club Atlético Cerro from Divisional Intermedia . Thus, there was no relegation from the Primera División that season. Top scorer was Atilio García with 18 goals .
