The 1976 season of the Primera División was the 73rd season (the 45th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .
The Primera División consisted of twelve clubs in the championship season of 1976, the teams of which met twice in a total of 132 championship games played from the beginning of March to the end of July of that year. 360 goals were scored. The championship was won for the first time by Club Atlético Defensor as first in the table in front of Club Atlético Peñarol and Nacional Montevideo as second and third in the season final table . For the first time since the beginning of the professional age in 1932 in Uruguay, not Peñarol or Nacional, but another club Uruguayan champions. Centro Atlético Fénix had to relegate to the Segunda División . Defensor and Peñarol qualified for the 1977 Copa Libertadores .
As in the previous three years, Fernando Morena from Peñarol was the top scorer with 18 goals .
