The 1972 season of the Primera División was the 69th season (the 41st of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted in the championship season of 1972 from twelve clubs, whose teams met twice in a total of 132 championship games played from the end of July to mid-December of the year. 308 goals were scored. The championship won Nacional Montevideo as first in the table in front of Club Atlético Peñarol and Club Atlético Defensor as second and third in the season's final table . Sud América had to relegate to the Segunda División . Nacional and Peñarol qualified for the 1973 Copa Libertadores .

The top scorer was Juan Carlos Mamelli from the champions Nacional Montevideo with 20 goals .
