To create the music for A Star Is Born , Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who star in the film, worked with a number of country musicians, including Lukas Nelson, who is also a member of Cooper's band in the film. For the pop-oriented songs on the soundtrack, Lady Gaga teamed up with her long-time colleague DJ White Shadow. The soundtrack also includes pieces by Jason Isbell , Mark Ronson , Diane Warren and Andrew Wyatt. The soundtrack was released on October 5, 2018.

Singer-songwriter Jackson Maine was once a country music superstar in the movie, but his age and alcoholism dragged his own career into a downward spiral. His hearing gets weaker, and so does his success. He has become a star whose star is slowly fading. Then, however, he meets the singer Ally in a drag club in the film , who explains to him that she does not sing her own songs because she does not feel comfortable with them, since almost everyone has told her that they like the way she is sings, but not her looks. Jackson quickly recognized her great musical talent. A passionate love relationship develops between the two and Jackson helps Ally, who had almost given up her dream, with her career. When Jackson puts her in the spotlight, she becomes a star overnight, but Ally's career quickly eclipses his own.
One of Ally's statements in the film has autobiographical characteristics. In real life, Lady Gaga had often said in the past that she did not find herself particularly beautiful. “I'm not a classic beauty. If there was a mathematical formula for beauty, I don't know if I would be the algorithm. ”Behind the elaborate costumes that have become like a protective shield for her, she feels more comfortable than completely natural, which is very rarely seen. "I wear these outfits, these creations because I don't want to see the reality of what people ask of a pop star!"

Filming of A Star Is Born began in April 2017. The first recordings were made in Indio , where Cooper and Lady Gaga performed together at the local music festival . On April 18 and 19, 2017, recordings were made here at the Empire Polo Club. Cooper explained that after getting Lady Gaga on board, insisted that the songs be recorded live and that the performances be in real venues. Aside from Coachella, the film also shot other live performances from Stagecoach, Glastonbury and The Forum .
Cooper spent two and a half years preparing for the film and figuring out what kind of musician his character should be. He worked with a number of musicians and the voice coach Roger Love. Cooper said, “It kind of ended up becoming his own kind of creation. If I had another year of preparation it would have been all rock, but now it's kind of a hybrid. ”Cooper also reached out to Lukas Nelson, son of country music singer Willie Nelson , after seeing him on Desert Trip in October 2016 , and asked him to work on the film as a music advisor. Nelson later wrote songs with Lady Gaga. Nelson and his band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, can also be seen in the film as Cooper's support band. Lady Gaga, in turn, worked again with producer Mark Ronson and songwriter Hillary Lindsey , both of whom had contributed to her previous studio album, Joanne . She collaborated with DJ White Shadow on the pop-oriented numbers on the soundtrack, played by her character Ally.
All music in the film is original and was recorded live on the set. The soundtrack also includes contributions from Jason Isbell, Mark Ronson, Diane Warren and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow.

The soundtrack, which includes a total of 34 dialogues about music and pieces of music, 19 of them original songs, was released on October 5, 2018 by Interscope Records as a download and in physical form. The song Shallow contained on the soundtrack was released in advance on September 27, 2018 along with a music video.

A few hours after its release, the album topped the US and international iTunes charts. On October 12, 2018, the album debuted at number 1 on the Soundtrack Albums Charts and also entered the Official Albums Chart Top 100 in the UK. That same week, the soundtrack topped the Billboard 200 . With her fifth album at number 1 within a decade, Lady Gaga became the most successful artist in the US album charts for this period.

Laura Eberle from Moviepilot says that Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born is musically distancing herself from her beginnings as an artist almost exactly 10 years ago and stylistically ties in with her album Joanne, which was released in 2016 .
Billboard describes the soundtrack as integral to the plot of the film. Many of the songs are about the desire and longing for change, some express the great love and solidarity for each other / between the rock star Cooper and Ally.
Mark Kennedy of the Washington Post says the 19 original songs are varied and addicting, from bluesy rock to country to bubble gum pop. It was known that Lady Gaga was capable of great things, according to Kennedy, but the real miracle is Bradley Cooper's musicality: “We often make fun of actors who long to be rock stars, but Cooper shows real skills on the microphone . "
