Lori McKenna (born December 22, 1968 in Stoughton , Massachusetts ; actually Lorraine McKenna ) is an American folk and country musician.

Career

Although Lori McKenna was already musically active as a teenager, she started her music career quite late. She was 32 years old when she established herself with her gigs and released her first album Paper Wings and Halo on an independent label . It was not until the fourth album, Bittertown , that she received the attention that led to a record deal with the major Warner label . Faith Hill had covered two songs from the album and the McKenna theme song on her number one album Fireflies .

It took until 2007 for the first major release. The album Unglamorous reached number 1 on the Heatseeker charts, but otherwise did not meet expectations despite a Billboard 200 placement. McKenna stayed with the label as a songwriter and many well-known artists such as Keith Urban , Alison Krauss and Little Big Town recorded her songs. As a musician, she switched back to independent releases and was represented in the top 10 of the folk charts with albums such as Lorraine (2011) and The Bird and the Rifle (2016).

The latter album came about after she switched to the music publisher Creative Nation . The new collaboration as well as the work with producer Dave Cobb also brought her further songwriting successes. 2016 was the song Girl Crush by Little Big Town , where she was co-author for a Grammy as a song and as the year Country Song nominations. Winning the country category earned her her first Grammy. The song was also named Song of the Year at the CMA Awards . A year later she repeated her victory at the CMA Awards with the song Humble and Kind , which had been released in both her own and a version by Tim McGraw . The song also brought her the second Grammy Award, and there were other nominations for her own album The Bird and the Rifle and her song Wreck You .
