Hillary Lee Lindsey (born 1976 in Washington , Georgia ) is an American singer and songwriter.

She was born in Washington, Georgia. She has written songs with or for various artists, including Michelle Branch , Faith Hill , Martina McBride , Shakira , Lady Antebellum , Gary Allan , Sara Evans , Carrie Underwood , Kellie Pickler , Bon Jovi , Taylor Swift , Lady Gaga , Tim McGraw and Luke Bryan . In 2006 and 2016 Lindsey won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song for Carrie Underwoods Jesus, Take the Wheel and for Little Big Towns Girl Crush . In 2011, Lindsey received an Oscar nomination for Coming Home , recorded by Gwyneth Paltrow for the Country Strong soundtrack , for Best Original Song . That same year, Coming Home also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song along with There's a Place for Us , making Lindsey a double nomination in 2011. As of 2018, she has had 20 number one singles as a songwriter.

For her work on Jesus Take the Wheel , Girl Crush and Always Remember Us This Way , she was nominated three times for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year .

Life

In 1994, Lindsey moved from Washington, Georgia to Nashville to enroll at Belmont University's Music Business School. She told a roommate who was doing an internship with a record company about her plans and who took one of her tapes to work. The cassette was given to the publisher and Lindsey was signed to Famous Music Publishing . In her first year as a songwriter, she had eight recordings.

She had her first number one song as a songwriter in 2002 with Martina McBrides Blessed . Eleven of her number one hits as a songwriter are songs sung by Carrie Underwood , including Jesus Take the Wheel , Wasted , So Small , Just a Dream , Last Name and Two Black Cadillacs . Thirty million records have been sold with their compositions, and two of their songs have been featured on the ABC television series Nashville : Telescope , performed by Hayden Panettiere , and Change Your Mind , performed by Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio .
