Jennifer Nettles (born September 12, 1974 in Douglas , Georgia ) is an American country pop singer. She became known as one half of the Sugarland country duo .

Career

Jennifer Nettles started singing at the age of four. In her teenage years, she was in various bands whose repertoire ranged from gospel to grunge. After school, she embarked on a serious music career, forming the duo Soul Miner's Daughter with Cory Jones . They recorded two albums together in the second half of the 1990s and were also represented at larger festivals such as the Lilith Fair .

After the separation she looked for accompanying musicians and was active with the Jennifer Nettles Band from 2000 to 2003 . With her own recordings, she was also successful in radio stations and was named Independent Artist of the Year .

In 2003 she teamed up with Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush and formed the band Sugarland . After the first album, Hall left the band and they continued successfully with Bush as a duo. Before the second album, she recorded the duet Who Says You Can't Go Home with Jon Bon Jovi . The song became a number one hit on the country charts and earned her her first Grammy for Best Country Duet . Her second major personal success came just a year later with the million- selling Stay , which she wrote for Sugarland. In addition to a Grammy for the best country song , she also received an ACM and a CMA award for song of the year.

A successful time with Sugarland followed with three number one albums and other awards. Success lasted until 2011, when Nettles took a baby break and the band was put on hold.

Instead of a sequel, she began a solo career in 2013 and made recordings for a solo album. That Girl was released in January 2014, it reached number 1 on the country charts and number 5 on the official album charts. The following year she made her Broadway debut in the lead role of Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago . She also appeared in a biography of Dolly Parton . A year later she changed her record label and released her second solo album Playing with Fire there , but it was not quite as successful as its predecessor. In late 2016, she released an album of Christmas songs called To Celebrate Christmas .
