Douglas is a city and also the county seat of Coffee County in the US state of Georgia with 11,589 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Douglas is located in southern Georgia, about 310 km south of Atlanta . The nearest major cities are Jacksonville (160 km southeast) and Tallahassee (190 km southwest), both in Florida .
history
The settlement was founded in 1855 and named after Senator Stephen Arnold Douglas . In 1895 Douglas was connected to the railway network. In the same year Douglas was named a town and two years later a city .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 11,589 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 4,259 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.54 people per household. There are a total of 4,868 households.
64.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.20 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 36.8% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 26.7% of all households.
31.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 45.8% of the population were male and 54.2% were female.
41.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 52.0% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 4.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 6.3% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 33,576 USD , while 28.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Douglas is traversed by US Highways 221 and 441 and Georgia State Routes 31 , 32 , 135 , 158 and 206 . The local airfield Douglas Municipal Airport borders the city in the south. The nearest international airport is Valdosta Regional Airport (around 90 km south).
