Sister Hazel is a rock band from Florida . The name Sister Hazel comes from an African American woman who founded the band Sister Hazel's Rescue Mission in the hometown of the 1970s . The dedication and ambition of this woman against racism led the band to choose her name.
Band history
Sister Hazel was founded in Gainesville , Florida in 1993 by Ken Block and Andrew Copeland . The other band members have gradually joined.
Before the band got their first big record deal , they financed their first two albums (1994 and 1996) themselves. But as they enjoyed increasing popularity and sales in Florida, the record label Universal Records took over the material in late 1996 and Sister Hazel had hers Major label record deal.
So the first two albums Sister Hazel (1994) and ... Somewhere More Familiar (now 1997) appeared again, but this time in the whole of the USA. Sister Hazel were now known. Their single All for you became a hit in the charts and ... Somewhere More Familiar achieved platinum status . In 1999 the band was on the movie soundtrack for 10 Things I Hate To Hear About You . On this CD the song Your Winter is in a different version than on the album Fortress .
In 2000, the album Fortress was released and in the USA the song Change your Mind became a radio hit. This was also contributed to the film soundtrack by Teuflisch . A year later, the band could be heard in the film The Wedding Planner with the song We'll find it .
A short time later, Sister Hazel from Universal Records switched back to Croakin Poets and Rock Ridge Music , an independent label, in order to have more control over their music.
In December 2002 Chasing Daylight was released before, almost exactly one year later (2003), the first Sister Hazel live double CD Live LIVE was released. At the beginning of 2004 the first Sister Hazel DVD followed, on which a complete concert and an on the road documentation of the band can be seen. On August 24, 2004 further works were released on the American market: The album Lift and Drew Copeland's solo album No Regrets .
The sixth studio album, Absolutely, will be released on October 10, 2006, and in June 2007, BAM Vol. 1 will be the first B-side compilation. In autumn 2007 Sister Hazel will bring a Christmas CD with Santa´s Playlist on the market, on which a mixture of their own compositions and well-known Christmas carols can be heard. In 2008, Sister Hazel was again hard at work. An acoustic unplugged album entitled Before the Amplifiers has been released and singer Ken Block also released his solo album Drift . The release came out in 2009 and Heartland Highway followed in 2010 .
style
The style of the band is not easy to describe. It can be compared to bands like Vertical Horizon , Pat McGee Band , Matchbox Twenty , the Goo Goo Dolls or Wideawake . Sister Hazel is best described as a GrassRoot Southern Rock band with modern pop rock influences. But some pieces also go in the direction of blues, acoustic, folk or funk. Sister Hazel is a very versatile band. Most of the bands in similar directions come from the USA and are rather unknown in Germany.
Events
Sister Hazel are co-founders of various charity events and events such as B. Lyrics for Life , The Rock Boat or The Rock Slope .
These are festival events with a familiar character. The Rock Boat z. B. has been sailing with the bands on board in the Caribbean sea every year since 2001. In addition to the concerts, there are various jam sessions on deck and on the stages.
