Vertical Horizon is one of Washington, DC native rock - pop band.

Band history

Vertical Horizon was founded in the early 1990s by Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane, who were studying at Georgetown University at the time . After graduating in 1991, the two moved to Boston and in 1992 released their first album, There and Back Again , on their own , for which they had recorded all the instruments themselves.

For the next few years they were mostly on tour with similar bands like Jackopierce , The Allman Brothers Band and Better Than Ezra . It wasn't until 1995 that they went back to a recording studio. For the album Running on Ice they took over the vocals and the acoustic guitars, but brought in guest musicians like Doug Derryberry, Jackopierce and Carter Beauford to support the rest of the instruments .

Together with drummer Ed Toth and bassist Ryan Fisher, Keith and Matt also toured in 1996. The result of this was the live album Live Stages , which was released at the end of the year. The band also tried to find a major label as a partner. With success, they got a record deal with Sony BMG / RCA . In mid-1997, Fisher, who had never planned to become a permanent member of the band, was replaced on short notice by Seth Horan after his departure, before a casting was held in 1998. The first bass player to introduce himself - Sean Hurley - was very well received and after numerous other auditions it was finally decided that he would be a permanent member.

In 1999 they released the album Everything You Want on RCA . The first single from it -  We Are  - had only moderate success, but the second single Everything You Want climbed to number 1 on the US singles chart and thus became one of the most played songs on radio in 2000. The third single You ' re a God was also successful and was also used for the Bruce Almighty soundtrack . With Best I Ever Had (Gray Sky Morning) a fourth single was released, but was not as successful as its two predecessors. In 2005, however, a cover version of this song was released by country musician Gary Allan , who was able to land a Top10 success in the country charts.

After further tours, the recordings for the next album, Go , began in 2001 , the original release date of which was to be September 2002. Problems with the label delayed the release for a whole year. In September 2003 it was finally brought onto the market without any major announcement from the label and was not very successful, which is why Vertical Horizon finally parted with RCA in mid-2004. At the beginning of 2005 they signed with Hybrid Recordings, which Go 2005 re-released and with much more success.

In July 2005, drummer Ed Toth left the band to play with the Doobie Brothers . Craig McIntyre and Blair Sinta stepped in to replace them, although no permanent solution has yet been found. In June 2006 Matt Scannell announced on the band's homepage that work on a new album had begun and that drummer Neil Peart from Rush was not only recording a few songs as a guest musician, but was also contributing material for a song.

On September 22nd, 2009 the new album Burning The Days was released . The first single was The Middle Ground .
