I'll Never Love Again was by Lady Gaga , Natalie Hemby , Hillary Lindsey and Aaron Raitiere for the film A Star Is Born by Bradley Cooper wrote. The career of the singer-songwriter Jackson Maine in the film his tinnitus and alcoholism did a disservice. In a drag club he met the exceptionally talented singer Ally, who explained to him that she did not sing her own songs because she was not comfortable with them, since almost everyone had told her that although he liked the way she sing, but not their appearance. Jackson quickly recognizes her great musical talent and enables Ally, who has almost given up her dream, to perform during his tour. A passionate love relationship develops between the two.

In the film I'll Never Love Again is the last song to be sung by Ally at the memorial service for Jackson after Jackson's suicide and can also be heard in an extended version in the credits.

The recording was made in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Shortly before the start of the recording, the news reached Lady Gaga that Sonja Durham, her longtime assistant and close friend, who had terminal cancer, was in her last moments. Filming was temporarily suspended, but Durham died ten minutes before the singer arrived at the hospital. On the advice of Durham's husband, Lady Gaga made her way back to the film set to end the scene and sound recording for the song. In an interview with music journalist Zane Lowe, the singer praised director Bradley Cooper for dealing tactfully with her grief.

Along with Always Remember Us This Way and Shallow , the song was one of the three songs from the film A Star Is Born that Warner Bros. should submit to the Oscars. Ultimately, only Shallow was submitted and also nominated by the Academy and awarded at the end.
