Telephone is a dance-pop song by the American singer Lady Gaga . The song is the second single from their second studio album The Fame Monster . Lady Gaga recorded the song with the American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles .

background

Lady Gaga originally wrote Telephone with Rodney Jerkins for Britney Spears . When their label rejected the song, she recorded the song herself with Beyoncé Knowles for The Fame Monster . Gaga said, “I wrote it for her a long time ago and she just didn't use it for her album. It's fine because I love the song and I get to perform it now. "" I wrote it for her a long time ago and she didn't use it on her album. That's good because I love the song and I'll be singing it now. ”Spears was originally supposed to do the guest vocals as well, but for reasons unknown it was eventually sung by Knowles. The idea behind the song was the fear of not being able to breathe in the figurative sense, of not being able to enjoy life. Lady Gaga said in an interview that she found it difficult to go out and have a "good time" because she loved her work so much:

“Fear of suffocation - something that I have or fear is never being able to enjoy myself, […] 'Cause I love my work so much, I find it really hard to go out and have a good time. […] I don't go to nightclubs, […] You don't see pictures of me falling out of a club drunk. I don't go - and that's because I usually go and then, you know, a whiskey and a half into it, I got to get back to work. "

composition

Telephone was written by Lady Gaga, Rodney Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Lazonate Franklin, and Beyoncé Knowles. Although the song is laid out as a duet, Knowles only appears in a short musical interlude in the middle verse. The song begins with Lady Gaga singing over a harp melody in a somber, solemn voice . The singer is in a club and her boyfriend calls, she says: "Stop calling, stop calling, I don't want to talk anymore." Telephone consists of an extended bridge , the verse and an epilogue , where a voice announces, that the number cannot be reached at the moment. According to Sony / ATV Music Publishing's Musicnotes.com website , the song is in a standard 4/4 beat at a tempo of 122 beats per minute . Gaga's singing ranges from the low three-bar F 3 to the highest note of C 5 . The basic key is F minor, the piece has the chord progression Fm – A flat – Bb – Fm.

According to Gaga, the phone in the song is not a physical phone, but the one in her head. She explained: “ That's my fear - that the phone's ringing and my head's ringing, […] Whether it's a telephone or it's just the thoughts in your head, that's another fear. "" That's my fear - that the phone will ring and my head will ring too [...] Whether it's a phone or just the thoughts in your head, that's another fear. "

reception

Telephone received mostly good reviews. MusicOMH's Michael Hubbard said the song "may be the best on the album." He praised the "brilliant bridge" and the end of the song. Popjustice gave the song good reviews: "It's a bit like Gwen 's What You Waiting For? meets Timbalands The Way I Are and this applies to about fifty other things ... The structure is pretty exciting ... there is something brilliant in Beyoncé's contribution that makes everything seem very fine. "

Amy Phillips of Pitchfork Media placed Telephone 55th on their Top Tracks of 2010 list, saying it was "one of the less weird tracks on The Fame Monster ". Mikael Woods of the Los Angeles Times said Telephone "is a careful consideration of how annoying it is when a guy keeps calling you while you're at a club."

Sarah Hajibagheri of The Times and Armond White of New York Press weren't impressed with the song. Hajibagheri said, "The appearance of Beyoncé's vocals along with the ringing of a phone underlines the feeling of utter chaos." Telephone was ranked third on its list of "Top 25 Singles of 2010" by Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield . The single was nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals".
